COLTT - Canadian Outdoor Leadership Training for Teens

In 2008, COLTT plans on providing two individual 5-day programs for youth aged 14-18. These programs are designed to be work in tandem with one another and registration priority will be given to youth registering for both weeks. The first week is "base-camp" based and will take place entirely at the Synergy Ark. This is a learning based week designed to develop skills, understanding, competency, and confidence. Participants will camp outdoors in tents the entire week and although food will be provided, they will be responsible for it's preparation. Cooking will either be done on an open fire or on the provided compact camp stoves. After a day of team building and orientation activities, participants will learn the skills of: - leave no trace back country camping - map and compass navigation - night navigation - high rope rappelling - high rope ascending - rope rescue - basic first aid - canoe strokes - portage skills - flora and fauna identification - group leadership - team dynamics

After a week learning all the skills related to back country camping, participants are now ready for their second expedition based week.Monday morning participants will leave the Ark and travel 2 hours up the road to the La Verendrye Wildlife Reserve for a 5 day - 4 night loop canoe trip. During this trip the "COLTT's" will have the opportunity for an overnight solo experience as well being responsible for trip leader duties. Although this is obviously a wilderness based and focused program, the importance of teams and leaderships in everyday society will be addressed and discussed. It is the objective of COLTT to not only have graduates leave with increased wilderness skills, but also the skills necessary to allow them to better succeed in their lives and within society. The cost of this program is $625 per person per week, or $1200 for two week registration. COLTT will provide a 4:1 instructor to participant ratio. We also provide all the food, tents, sleeping bags/pads, backpacks, canoe equipment, cooking equipment, rope gear, etc. Participants are only responsible for their own personal clothing and toiletries. Participants are encouraged to arrive at the Synergy Ark by 9am on Monday morning and to depart at 5pm on Friday afternoon. Other arrangements may be considered on request. The two weeks being scheduled for 2008 are currently: August 11 - 15, and August 18 -22. More weeks may be scheduled based upon demand. These courses are capped at 12 participants per week. Registration for the full two week program now open. Registration for a single week will open on July 1, 2008, based on availability. Stay tuned to this webpage for more developments and information.
