The race explained
Racers will arrive at the Ark to register prior to 9:30 on the morning of the race. At this time race instructions will be provided to all of the teams. At 9:55 race teams will be given their 1:10,000 scale maps. These maps are moderately detailed and provide information regarding contour intervals, trails, and many major features. There will also be approximately 25 CPs (checkpoints) marked on the map. At 10am, racers are free to set out on the course in search of these CPS. On the finger of one the team members will be an SI Timing Chip. When a CP is found, the Timing Chip is inserted into a box on the flag, and their arrival time is noted on the chip. Teams must use strategy, navigation and endurance to locate as many CPs as possible in the 3 hour time limit. Points are awarded for each CP found and points are deducted for every minute the team arrives after the 3 hour time limit at the Ark. The team's Timing Chip is then entered into a computer and the total points are immediately tabulated.
All of this is done on snowshoes!

A Video Tour of the Fall ROGAINE
To visualize what you might be in for, check out the video created by Steven Meyer for Get Out There Magazine following the 3 hour ROGAINE he competed in at the Ark in September 2011. The winter race will be similar, except everything will be covered in white and racers will be wearing snowshoes.
